No needles needed for this thread!

Voice Thread is one of the newer tools available for faculty to use.  It was piloted Fall and Spring semester and now will be available campus-wide!  VoiceThread is a web-based platform available through Blackboard, which allows instructors and students to upload slides, images, video, or documents, record audio, video, or text comments, and then invite others to view and record comments as well.

Yammer while you wait

From the Yammer Blog “Did you know that Yammer is a great way to kickstart conversation inside and outside the classroom?  How?”  Well rather than me telling you here is what one of your colleagues, Kim Stokes has to say about using Yammer!

“We use Yammer as a communication platform for our clinical year students. It’s a great way to make class wide announcements when each student is in a very different course. We make a private page for each class so we can chat away. The students can answer each other’s questions sometimes in the main page and we can poll students and get feedback quickly. We pin documents to the wall that are of upmost importance (evaluations, manuals, etc) and we can private message persons when we need to discuss personal information.

I personally do not have outlook on my phone to get a break from work when I”m not at work. But I always worry about student emergencies. The Yammer app allows students to reach me if there is an emergency without having to give out my cell to them (which I do anyway) and it also  makes reaching me really easy. The app puts instant notifications on their phone re: Yammer notes/messages.

I love it. Yes, there are some things I’d tweak, but I love it overall.”

Since this is the longest day of the year . . .

My colleagues have made my life easy today with their posting about Webex

Webex serves as a feature-rich web conferencing tool for ECU users. On Friday, June 30, 2017, ITCS finalizes the transition from our current “on premises” version to the new WebEx Cloud. After this transition on June 30, the on premises WebEx version will no longer be available.

You Can Transition Now

WebEx Cloud is now live, so you may wish to start using the new interface. Also, after June 30, any scheduled meetings or recordings stored on the WebEx “on premises” server will no longer be available, so you will need to manually move these items as soon as possible.

Haven’t tried it?  Very easy to use and to share with colleagues within the college or outside the college.

Want to test it out send me a meeting request!

Not a tool but a tip!

I am often asked if Presenter View is available in the classrooms.  Unfortunately I have to answer no as the system does not recognize the screen as a 2nd monitor!  So how do you utilize this feature?  Using a laptop either Mac or PC will allow you to use Presenter View.

Another way to view your notes from your Ipad is to install the app Slideshark.com which will let you read your notes while advancing slides remotely.  Contact this office to find out more or search this blog for a previous post.

Tools, tools and more tools

Over the course of the summer I plan to highlight various tools, how they work and perhaps you would like to try in the fall.  Last week I blogged about clickers in the classroom so I already started my plan of action.

This week I want to highlight “AirMedia” a tool available in all classrooms in our college. AirMedia allows instructors and/or students to present from any mobile device in any platform. Using AirMedia you can walk into any meeting space and wirelessly present PowerPoint®, Excel®, and Word documents, PDFs, photos, and screen shots from your personal iOS® or Android™ mobile device on the room display. Click on the link above to find out more or contact OET for a demonstration!

Sometimes things do get easier!

Clickers, polling, audience response systems are great ways to create interactivity in the classroom, keep the students awake and find out just how much they are listening/understanding.  Turning Point Cloud is loaded on all classroom computers in our building and to use it for anonymous polling you just can go to Tools in your Blackboard course and click on the “Turning Account Registration” link in your Blackboard course, open the TurningPoint Software, or log into ResponseWare on a mobile device, you will be redirected to an ECU login page. You can download the software to your machine for easy creation of polling questions.  OET has clickers which can be checked out when needed.
