50 years of Beta Gamma Sigma Inductions

The James H. Bearden Induction Ceremony for spring 2018 new members of the ECU Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) was recently held at the Murphy Center at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

This induction ceremony marked the 50th anniversary of ECU’s BGS chapter.

About the 50th anniversary and the BGS chapter’s early days, Dr. Bearden said, “I think it was one of the proudest moments for the university many years ago when we were eligible to be a member. Back at that time, there was only one other school or college in North Carolina that was accredited.”

Senior MIS student Phillip Kinney of Durham said, “Simply, it’s truly an honor…to be invited to such a prestigious society.”

On joining BGS, Junior Jacqueline Fernandez of Raleigh said, “Being a member of Beta Gamma Sigma has given me the reassurance that everything that I’ve worked hard for has been worth it.”

Junior Luke Holloman of Greenville is excited to join BGS during the same year as the entity celebrates its 50th anniversary. “It (the invitation) encourages me to keep working hard because of that long history; it’s great history.”

Marketing Student Wins at State Conference

Andrew Lee, sophomore marketing major placed 3rd in the state in the individual competitive event Marketing Concepts, during the North Carolina Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference held April 5-8 in Charlotte, NC.

Lee is an Honors Ambassador in the ECU Honors College and the Scholarship Chairman for Sigma Nu Fraternity.  He is in the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and the NC Phi Beta Lambda, Future Business Leaders of America.

ECU AITP: Fall 2017 Charleston Trip

AITP (Assoc. of IT Professionals) holds a student chapter at ECU, which students of mainly the Management Information Systems program join to network and develop as a true IT professional. Recently, the club took a trip to Charleston, SC where they toured two cybersecurity companies, Sentar and KBR Wyle. Both companies have employed ECU alumni, so meeting with them and talking about how they utilized the university was essential to the students because the alumni are already familiar with the MIS program and courses and how the program directly relates to the field or cybersecurity. Many students even sent resumes to both companies. Another event that AITP attended in Charleston was a networking dinner held at the Hyatt Place. The club invited ECU alumni to come eat and speak about their companies.

The club chose Charleston to visit because it is a growing area for the IT field and ECU has alumni residing there. AITP believes that Charleston will be a hub for not only MIS ECU alumni, but alumni from all majors due to the growing businesses and population. The club hopes to revisit the alumni and other companies throughout the area in the upcoming years.

AMA Headed to National Conference!

With the help of generous funding from the Student Government Association and the College of Business, fourteen members of the ECU’s chapter of the American Marketing Association will be attending the 38th Annual International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 17-19, 2016.

Undergraduate and graduate ECU students will have the opportunity to learn from prominent industry professionals about careers and cutting edge marketing practices. The AMA International Collegiate Conference inspires and provides AMA members the tools they need to start their career as young business professionals.

ECU’s chapter will be participating in multiple competitions over the course of the weekend including: T-Shirt Design competition, Pitch Perfect competition, Marketing Strategy competition, AMA Sales competition, and a Relationship Selling Certificate program.

AMA students will also have the opportunity to hear from and network with Peter Horst, the Vice President/Chief Marketing Officer of The Hershey Company, and Monica Skipper, the Vice President/Brand Experience Marketing Executive of FedEx Services. There will also be a Special Speaking Session with Google Analytics Program Manager, Deepak Aujla.

A few of the noted sponsors of this year’s conference are eBay, Hershey, Northwestern Mutual, ABC Suppy Co. Inc., Aerotek, and TEKsystems.

Leading the Leaders of Tomorrow- College of Business Living Learning Community

As of the fall semester of 2012, all freshmen attending East Carolina University, aside from the few exceptions, are required to live in the dorm facilities offered by the University. It has been researched that students who live on campus for at least their freshman year, experience a better quality of learning (and I’m sure rolling out of bed and being 5 minutes away from class wouldn’t hurt either).

The Living Learning Community (LLC) at East Carolina University has been created to provide first year College of Business students with the opportunity to experience the transition to a larger university in a more personable atmosphere.

There are about 50 students in the LLC program this year who live together in Cotten Hall located in the Central Neighborhood of campus. It’s a great way for first year College of Busines students to be part of the excitement in the very heart of pirate nation!


These students benefit from living among others who share the same interests and goals as they do. Along with living among their peers, they are given the resource of their peer mentors who are upper classmen in the College of Business.

Peer Mentors

First year students are not the only ones who must adjust to new situations. However, beginning college may be the first time many students are out on their own and may sometimes feel left without guidance.

Having the peer mentor program allows upper classmen who have had experience in the College of Business, lead other students toward success. Peer mentors help with common adjustment issues first year students may have.

Mentors have been trained in personal development, academic scheduling, programming and other areas that support and strengthen the College of Business core values.  The leadership mentors Jack Prager, Samantha Sweeny, Haley Adams, Caroline Hill, Marisa Melchiorre, Eric Green and I, under the guidance of Kristen Harris, have developed a variety of engaging programs and activities. I think paintballing was our favorite program yet! We encourage active involvement in the university and develop unique events to maintain motivation.

Our programs help us develop a level of comfort between lower and upper level students that create a lasting bond. To be an effective peer mentor one must be knowledgeable about available campus resources, communicate with a variety of cultural and personal backgrounds, and function effectively in a team environment while being a dependable team member.

Melissa Melchiorre commented on her experience as a peer mentor by saying,

“We have helped students adjust to the COB or the college life in general by suggesting classes to take and letting the students know that there are other student available to talk to about school or other personal matters. Whether it is being away from home or adjusting to the busy college life, we are here to assist students to be successful and reach their goals. It is also rewarding to us knowing that we can help freshmen with lessons that we have learned and sharing our experiences with them.”Whole Gang Fountain

How to Become a Peer Mentor

The LLC program is just beginning to grow. Kristen Harris who runs the program plans to extend this program to the sophomore level during the 2013-2014 school year. This growing program hopes to develop a network of interdependent individuals who can concentrate on academic achievement in a productive and supportive community.

All qualified College of Business students are encouraged to apply for this leadership position. No prior experience is required and the position offers a great work environment, flexible schedule, supportive management, and an excellent opportunity to build and improve on your leadership skills. This is a paid position.


  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of 60 credit hours
    (by August of 2012)
  • 2 semesters completed at ECU
  • 2 semesters remaining at ECU
  • Declaration of Concentration in the College of Business
  • Involvement in campus/community service
  • In good standing with the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities
  • Full time status (at least 12 hours)
  • Attend Leadership Challenge Course
    (April 1st – 3rd)
