Law enforcement officials in Pickens County, S.C., said Monday morning they are still looking for the men responsible for a Saturday night shooting that killed a Clemson University student from Fort Mill.
Meanwhile, university officials sent an e-mail to students Sunday night — their second message of the day — advising them to lock their doors and windows, whether they are home or not.
Steven Gregory Grich, 23, a junior electrical engineering major, died from injuries he received at his off-campus residence in Chimney Ridge, a gated community off S.C. 93, near the town of Central, S.C. The community, about 2 miles northeast of Clemson, is popular with students from the university.
According to deputies in Pickens County, three masked men armed with guns entered Grich’s apartment through the back door about 8:30 p.m. and opened fire during an apparent armed robbery. Grich was among seven people in the residence, but nobody else suffered serious injuries or gunshot wounds. Investigators say they think Grich did not know his assailants.
Authorities also did not say if anything was taken from the apartment.
The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office has asked the public to watch for a black 2005 Dodge Durango with tinted windows, blue tinted headlights, and silver wheels. That vehicle was seen leaving Chimney Ridge after the shooting.
Anyone with information in the case is asked to call 864-868-2603.
“We are so sad about this sudden loss of one of our students,” Clemson Dean of Students Joy Smith said in a statement e-mailed to Clemson students, faculty and staff. “The death of a young person is always a tragedy, but it is especially so at this time of year. We will support his family and friends and other students during this difficult time.”
Later in the day, the Sheriff’s Office and Clemson officials sent an e-mail urging students to lock their doors and be mindful of suspicious activity.
A woman who answered the phone at a phone number listed for Grich’s parents in Fort Mill declined to comment.
No information has been released yet about funeral plans.
According to friends, the Grich family moved to York County a few years ago from Connecticut. Steven Grich was described by friends as a young man with varied interests, especially music.
Late Sunday night, friends set up a Facebook page, RIP Steven Gregory Grich.
The shooting happened in the Chimney Ridge subdivision, which heavily markets its two-bedroom homes to students, with amenities like year-round neighborhood parties and a 24-hour alarm system.
