East Carolina football appears poised to announce the hire of a new defensive coordinator as early as today, according to sources.
Head coach Ruffin McNeill was reportedly close to a final decision Thursday, and the lead candidate appears to be former Pirate defensive backs coach Rick Smith, who most recently was on Skip Holtz’s staff at South Florida.
Smith would replace Brian Mitchell, whose contract was not renewed this offseason after three lackluster years running the ECU defense.
Other candidates recently in the running for the job included Arkansas linebackers coach Randy Shannon, Cincinnati coordinator and former East Carolina DC Art Kaufman and Middle Tennessee State coordinator Tyrone Nix.
Smith coached the Pirates’ secondary from 2005 through ’09 and also served as Holtz’s assistant head coach his last three seasons in Greenville.
Smith served the same role at USF until Holtz was fired at the end of last season.
