The East Carolina football team emerged from a final flurry of recruiting activity this week with the hopes of signing a full limit of 25 recruits today on National Signing Day.
The bulk of ECU’s potential signings have been on board for a while, but today’s class saw a handful of additions and subtractions since late last week.
The Pirates made the most of their final weekend of visits, nabbing four expected signees to help compensate for the unexpected losses of running back Jabo Lee (committed to Tennessee) and defensive lineman Dontrill Hyman (West Virginia).
ECU got weekend nods from 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back DaShawn Benton and 6-4, 225-pound tight end Darren Dowdell, both out of Atlanta’s Grady High School. Also jumping on board were 6-2, 295-pound defensive tackle Demetri McGill (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) and 6-4, 240-pound defensive lineman Demage Bailey (Clayton/Clayton).
Although 5-11, 180-pound athlete Mykal Moody (Conway, S.C./Conway) also pledged his immediate future to the Pirates, some late technicalities will reportedly keep him from signing today. The Pirates are hopeful Moody will be on board eventually.
Late last week, ECU also got a verbal from 5-11, 228-pound running back Terrell Lane (Norton, Kan./Hutchinson Community College).
The pass-heavy Pirates already have a new quarterback on campus in 6-3, 208-pound Kurt Benkert (Cape Coral, Fla./Island Coast), and he is expected to be joined by four wide receiver signees: 6-2, 185-pound Isaiah Jones (Austin, Texas/Austin), 6-3, 205-pound Trevon Brown (Wilmington/New Hanover), 6-2, 175-pound Davon Grayson (Suffolk, Va./King’s Fork) and 5-11, 175-pound late addition A.J. Coplon (Havelock/Havelock).
Five offensive linemen are expected to sign today, including 6-3, 275-pound Larry Williams (Wilmington/Laney), 6-3, 305-pound Christian Matau (New Bern/New Bern), 6-7, 330-pound Brandon Smith (Kernersville/East Forsyth), 6-5, 305-pound Marquis Wallace (Richmond Va./Lackawanna, Pa., C.C.) and 6-4, 245-pound late addition Malcolm Ashley (Havelock/Havelock).
Expected to join the two recent defensive line commits are 6-1, 285-pound tackle Mike Myers (Goose Creek, S.C./Goose Creek) and a pair of ends in 6-3, 260-pound Kirk Donaldson (Charlotte/Vance) and Randall Anderson (Newcastle, Del./Fork Union Military Academy).
At linebacker, the Pirates already have 6-1, 235-pound Tristan Mumford (Statesville/Statesville) in class and are hoping to also get signatures from 6-0, 202-pound Devarius Brunson (Lake City, S.C./Lake City) and 6-2, 200-pound Patrick Green (Winston-Salem/North Forsyth).
In addition to Benton in the secondary, ECU is hopeful to sign four other defensive backs in 6-1, 185-pound Lucas Thompson (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange), 6-1, 180-pound Xavier Smith (Raleigh/Wakefield), 5-11, 170-pound Travon Simmons (Powder, Ga./Hillgrove) and 5-11, 175-pound Travis Phillips (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry), who will also run track at ECU.
In addition to the 25 signees, the Pirates are also expected to announce the addition of two invited walk-ons.
