Local safety advocates are hosting opportunities to dispose of unused prescription medications this week, including one today.
The medicine drop events are part of a statewide effort to provide a safe way to discard prescriptions and over-the-counter products that may be expired or unneeded, officials said.
Today’s drop will be at the East Carolina Heart Institute at Vidant Medical Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Others will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vidant Wellness Center, 2610 Stantonsburg Road, and Saturday at Target, 3040 S. Evans St.
The Washington Police Department also will hold a drop-off event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Walmart, 570 Pamlico Plaza.
Proper disposal of medications reduces accidental poisoning, illegal usage and drinking water contamination, officials said.
They events this week are part of National Poison Prevention Week and are sponsored by Safe Kids Coalition of Pitt County, N.C. Safe Kids, Vidant Medical Center Police, the Greenville Police Department and Pitt County Sheriff’s Office.
A permanent medicine drop box is located in the sheriff’s office lobby at the Pitt County Courthouse.
