An ECU student was killed early this morning when he fell from a tree and was impaled on a fence post, Greenville police reported.

The identity of the 21-year-old has not been released. Police said alcohol may have been a factor in the death.

The incident occurred about 1 a.m. in the woods behind University Manor apartments on East 10th Street, police reported.

Three friends were walking across a very large downed tree in the woods, located between the apartment complex and the Tar River to the north.

One of the three fell 6-8 feet from the tree onto a metal fence post, was impaled on the post and killed, police said.

Greenville Fire-Rescue responded and used cutting tools to remove the victim and the post from the ground.

No foul play is suspected, police reported.

The victims family is being notified.
