We at ECU very much appreciated the recent article (April 21) on Project STEPP and College STAR. Both programs are providing valuable opportunities and support for students with learning disabilities, and we’re very proud of their accomplishments.
I wanted to point out that many programs of this type would not be possible for ECU without the support of private donors. Those dollars provide significant resources that allow us to have impact beyond what could be reasonably supported with appropriated public funds. That private support and the generosity it represents is a critical factor in what we are able to achieve at ECU and in student success.
Project STEPP is a direct example of that impact. Without a significant gift from this community from Walter and Marie Williams, this program would never have gotten off the ground. That helped us initiate this effort. Thus, with this program in the spotlight, I wanted to take the opportunity to point out that contribution and the direct role private support plays in excellent higher education.
