A Greenville man suffered multiple gunshots to his legs Thursday in an incident near East Carolina University, police reported.
William Harris, 24, was shot about 11:30 p.m. in the 200 block of East 12th Street, according to the Greenville Police Department.
Officers responding to the call found him in front of 205 E. 12th St., a news release said.
Harris told officers that three or four people stopped him while he was walking in the area and shot at him several times.
Detectives and forensics personnel recovered several .22-caliber cases from the street, the release said.
Police said suspect and vehicle descriptions were not available on Thursday. An East Carolina University alert indicated the shooting was near the Province Apartment Complex.
The alert said a green truck with two or three men fled toward Charles Boulevard.
The gunfire could have been the result of a dispute, police said, but that information has not been confirmed.
