An ECU student and two family members were robbed at gunpoint outside Greenville Mall on Thursday, the day before her graduation.
The robbery occurred as Abigail Taylor, 22, was talking with two family members near the Pier 1 Imports about 9 p.m., the Greenville Police Department reported.
The victims were standing by their cars when a man approached, asked for a light, then produced a silver handgun and demanded money and jewelry, police said. The man took cash, and jewelry before running toward Arlington Boulevard.
Neither Taylor nor her family members, Gregory Taylor, 50, and Natalie Taylor, 47, both of Lexington, were injured. A police spokesman confirmed the three are related but did not know how.
Gregory Taylor said by phone on Friday that he did not want to discuss the incident at this time.
Abigail Taylor, whose hometown is Lexington, was studying speech and hearing sciences, according to the university registrar’s office.
She was among ECU students set to graduate at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Friday, according to a program from the commencement ceremony. She received her bachelor’s degree from the School of Allied Health.
An effort to track the suspect with a police dog was unsuccessful.
The suspect was described as a black male, 19-25 years old. He has a slim, muscular build and a dark complexion. He was wearing jeans, a black T-shirt and a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball hat.
Police on Friday afternoon release a composite drawing of the suspect developed by forensics personnel. The case remained under investigation.
