DURHAM — N.C. Central football coach Henry Frazier III has been suspended after being charged with violating a domestic violence protective order, the school announced Tuesday.

Frazier was arrested Monday and released the same day on $5,000 bail.

“Coach Frazier has been suspended with full pay in accordance with the university policies and procedures while the matter is being investigated by legal authorities,” the university statement read.

Frazier’s salary is $225,500, according to a UNC System database.

Assistant head coach Dwayne Johnson will serve as the acting head coach.

Several attempts to call Frazier for comment were unsuccessful.

Cary Police Capt. Don Hamilton said Monday’s arrest may have followed Frazier’s attempt to contact his wife; she told police he did not assault her.

His mother, Dessie Harris, would not say what happened but said there are two sides to every story.

“He couldn’t do that because I did not raise him that way,” Harris said. “He would not have made it that far if I raised him that way.”

“When you get mad at Henry, you get mad with me,” she said. “This stuff has been going on for too long.”

The protective order was renewed July 15, according to court records.

Frazier was suspended from N.C. Central after being charged with assault on a female in May 2012. Authorities said he and his wife were arguing when the assault took place.

He was reinstated in July 2012 after the university said his legal matter had been resolved.

“Frazier is remorseful for the distraction,” then Chancellor Charlie Nelms said.

This would be Frazier’s third year as head coach of the Eagles. He was hired in 2010 to turn around a program that was making a transition to Division I. In his first season, the Eagles finished 2-9 and were 10th in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Last season, the Eagles finished 6-5 and fourth in the conference.

The first game of the 2013 season is Aug. 31 against Duke.
