I read with interest your Aug. 26 article “Students ask feds to fight sex crimes” regarding sexual assault reporting at American universities.

I certainly sympathize with anyone victimized through sexual violence. A sexual assault survivor who chooses to report the event to his/her college ought to receive all of the support that the college can offer, and that institution ought to comply with reporting requirements as well. But let us remember that sexual assault is a crime, and when the survivor chooses to report, the survivor should also strongly consider reporting to law enforcement.

That piece of the puzzle seems to be missing from the reporting. Law enforcement agencies have the tools, power and expertise to investigate sexual crimes and, where evidence exists and can be collected, can get the ball rolling toward separating sexual criminals from society.
