Elizabeth City State University says it is laying off 46 employees due to state funding cuts and declining enrollment.
The university has a $5-million budget shortfall this school year.
“In making painful, but necessary, reduction-in-force decisions, our first priority has been to protect classroom instruction for students,” said interim Chancellor Charles Becton. “We evaluated every school, division, and department to identify potential cost savings.”
To minimize the impact on employees, the university first eliminated 41 vacant positions and discontinued 34 temporary employment contracts. ECSU says with the exception of public safety, most other areas of the university were affected.
The 46 employees will lose their jobs in the next several weeks.
