Three sought in attempted robbery on NCSU campus

Raleigh, N.C. — North Carolina State University police were searching Wednesday for three men wanted in connection with an attempted robbery on central campus.

According to authorities, a male student was leaving Carmichael Gymnasium on Cates Avenue at about 11 p.m. when he was approached by a man who requested help.

After the student followed the man into an area between Owen and Turlington halls, he was approached by two other men. The three men demanded that the student give them the bag he was carrying.

The men forcibly took the bag from him, but dropped it before fleeing on foot toward the Free Expression Tunnel.

The suspects implied that they had a weapon, but the student never saw one. No injuries were reported.

One suspect was described as 6 feet 1 inches tall and about 26 to 30 years old, police said. He was wearing a navy hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. A second suspect was reportedly wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and khaki pants.

A description of the third suspect was not available.

Anyone with information about the attempted robbery should call N.C. State police at 919-515-3000.

Authorities reminded students Thursday of several safety tips to follow when traveling on campus:

  • Walk in well-lighted areas
  • Walk in groups whenever possible, especially at night
  • Avoid distractions while walking such as listening to headphones or texting
  • Consider utilizing public transportation or the university’s safety escort at 919-515-3000
