Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is again extending its payment deadline for subsidized health insurance.

The state’s largest insurer said Friday the new deadline will be moved back from Jan. 10 to Jan. 24.

Coventry Health Care of the Carolinas also extended its deadline, from Jan. 14 to Jan. 17.

Blue Cross and Coventry are among numerous insurers nationwide giving customers additional time to pay for subsidized coverage amid continuing reliability issues with the federal insurance marketplace.

“It has to do with the challenges associated with the rollout of the Affordable Care Act,” said Blue Cross spokesman Lew Borman.

Blue Cross and Coventry are the only two companies selling subsidized health insurance in North Carolina under the new health care law, also known as Obamacare.

Borman said customers are seeking confirmation that their applications have been processed, and many applications are coming in incomplete or require verification.

Blue Cross is also keeping its customer service center open until midnight Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday this month. The call center’s number is 800-446-8053.
