The 2014 Campus Operations Awards for Excellence recipients are Elizabeth Mills with Facilities Service Center and Ruthie Fairbanks with Utilities Services for service and Jeremy Russell with Facilities Services Project Management for leadership.

William E Bagnell, associate vice chancellor for Campus Operations, and Griffin L. Avin, director of Facilities Services on Health Sciences campus, recently earned the certified educational facilities professional designation from the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA).
Earning the CEFP demonstrates understanding and application of skills to create and maintain safe, functional and inspiring learning environment for current and future generations. The CEFP exam covers general administration and management; operations and maintenance; energy, utilities, and environmental stewardship; and planning, design and construction.
APPA is the premier membership organization for educational facilities professionals and their learning institutions. APPA’s mission is to elevate the educational facilities profession and enable institutions to positively transform their learning environments.

The third annual Veterans Support Day and Bike Wash Saturday, Aug. 9 will benefit East Carolina University’s Operation Reentry NC, a university-wide initiative to address the rehabilitation and re-entry challenges for military personnel, veterans and their families.
Open to the public, the event runs from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Hometown Harley Davidson, 2300 Elaine’s Way in Winterville. Active and retired military personnel are urged to attend. Representatives from ECU will discuss Operation Reentry and other veterans programs available in eastern North Carolina.
Operation Reentry supports the veteran population who face numerous challenges in re-entering society following deployment. Some wounded warriors face physical disabilities resulting from blast injury, some face invisible wounds from traumatic stress. Most all face difficult post-deployment adjustment back to family and community life as well as in the workplace.
The Operation Reentry program helps them battle issues such as suicide, homelessness, substance abuse and unemployment by providing resilience and re-entry interventions. The ORNC mobile unit coordinates with the Navigate Counseling Clinic in the College of Allied Health Sciences to bring professional counseling services and other resources to veterans in rural and underserved areas.
Veterans Support Day is hosted by the Veterans Motorcycle Club and the American Legion Riders, with the support of Hometown Harley Davidson. Other participating organizations include the Pitt County Veterans Council, Disabled American Veterans, Fleet Reserve Association, Marine Corps League and the Department of Veteran Affairs.

East Carolina University’s Student Health Services hosted an AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care) fair March 11 for health services employees as a way to prepare them for the June AAAHC survey for national accreditation.
The event offered interactive games that educated participants on issues such as patient rights, quality of care and quality improvements. Participants who successfully completed all games had an opportunity to enter a drawing to win homemade baked goods and rain gear.

Student Health Services’ preparation for AAAHC accreditation is an ongoing process that, in addition to the fair, includes mock inspections, education sessions, self-assessment of AAAHC standards and bimonthly chapter captain meetings. SHS was re-accredited by AAAHC in 2011. The accreditation certification demonstrates commitment to provide the highest level of quality of care to ECU students.
AAAHC is a private, non-profit organization formed in 1979. Their primary purpose is to develop standards to advance and promote patient safety, quality care and value for ambulatory health care through peer-based accreditation process, education and research. The AAAHC Accreditation is a voluntary process which involves an onsite visit for surveyors to measure health care organizations’ quality of services and performance against nationally recognized standards.

Longtime ECU employee Hagar Jackson celebrated her 80th birthday March 18.
She has worked at ECU for 27 years, beginning in 1986 at age 50. She retired when she turned 65, then returned to work. Since 1990, she has worked in patient access services in the division of cardiology, which is now part of the East Carolina Heart Institute at ECU.
“When you find your nest, stay in it,” she said. She added that she plans to keep working “until I get old enough to retire.”
