03/30/14 German Events

Dear friends of ECU’s program in German,

This week features a film by one of Germany’s most acclaimed directors, Margarethe von Trotta, about one of the twentieth-century’s most insightful political theorists/philosophers: Hannah Arendt. You won’t want to miss it.
We also have German Club on Tuesday, and you are all invited to mark your calendars for our annual Osterfeuer on April 13 (please rsvp to Prof. Jones by this Wednesday) and our first-ever Musikabend on April 25. More details are below, including a call for student volunteers at this Saturday’s Open House.
Mit herzlichen Grüßen
David Smith, Associate Professor

VOLUNTEER REQUEST from PROF. JENSEN

“Dear German majors, minors, and potential Spring Open House volunteers,
I am this semester’s German faculty representative and would like to have enthusiastic student helpers who will chat with high school students and incoming freshmen while I talk to the parents about the ECU German program. Ideally, you will wear Pirate gear and bring your textbook to show to our young visitors. We will have brochures and hand-outs for you to distribute and discuss. You need to prepare nothing special — just bring your smile and two hours of your time! The heaviest traffic is in the morning hours, and I would appreciate if you could come earlier rather than later in the day.

Open House takes place on Saturday, April 5th, in the Student Rec Center from 8:30 am to 2 pm (These times are estimates. 8:30-9:00, for instance, is general set-up time). The German table is located in the open gym area in the rec center. An information flyer that provides the exact table number is always made available at the entrance to the gym.

Email me (jensenb@ecu.edu) if yo can come and tell me your preferred time slot. If your course requires cultural outreach points, you can earn one point per two hourse spent at Open House.”

LOOKING AHEAD

–Sunday, 13 April, 4-7 p.m.: Osterfeuer, River Park North.
Please see the attached flyer and sign up with Prof. Jones (jonessu@ecu.edu) by April 2.

–Friday, 25 April: Musikabend, 6pm-?. Please mark your calendars to join us for an evening of music (Brahms, Bach, …), performed by our students! Details forthcoming.
