Extremism in Democratic Societies – German Film Screening, November 13th
Next week offers many opportunities to explore diverse cultural perspectives and experiences through events put on as part of International Week, National French Week, or our foreign language films series. If you haven’t made plans yet for Tuesday, November 13th, at 5:30pm (Bate 1020), please join us for a screening of the recent, critically acclaimed German film In the Fade (Fatih Akin, 2017), which stars Diane Kruger (in an impressive German-speaking lead role, earning her a best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival) and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film, the Critic’s Choice Movie Award, along with several others.
With the recent increase of right-wing terrorism in Germany, the film In the Fade is grappling with the question of how democratic societies deal with homegrown political extremists, who seek protection from the democratic institutions they are intent on destroying. How should the justice system, victims, and society at large respond? The film centers on Katja (Diane Kruger), who is suddenly faced with unspeakable loss and who finds her grief and helplessness curdling into the kind of hate that can inspire similar violence that took the lives of her loved ones.
