Light as an Element of Design

Posted in Light, Lighting Models, S12 on April 23rd, 2012 by gustinac

Once again the students looked at lighting phenomena, and constructed lighting models.  These exercises allowed them to observe how light functions as an element of 3D design.

Raleigh Field Trip

Posted in Field Trip, Light, S12 on March 12th, 2012 by gustinac

As we have been doing for the past three years, the students in IDSN 1500 made a field trip to Raleigh to view lighting installations there.

This semester, we visited McConnell Studios, and were given a tour by owner Matt McConnell.  Mr McConnell and his team do both lighting design and fabrication.

After visiting their facility, we went on to see three restaurants for which McConnell Studios provided lighting: Jibarra, buku, and The Mint.

Welcome back for another semester of Color and Light in Interior Design.

This Spring, we are excited to have Ms Leslie Davis as our visiting lecturer.  Ms Davis is principal at Leslie Davis Lighting Design in the San Francisco Bay area, and a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.  She will be presenting work from her firm’s portfolio via teleconference, as well as reviewing students’ final projects.

Please check back during the semester to view student work!

Lighting as a 3-D Design Element

Posted in Uncategorized on November 8th, 2010 by gustinac

This assignment requires the students to construct a lighting model, to show how the Design Element of light actualizes the 3-D Principles of Design.  The students photographed the models in slightly different lighting situations and identified the Design principle displayed in each photo.

Assignment 6

Behavior of Light

Posted in F10, Light on November 8th, 2010 by gustinac

In this assignment, the students worked in teams. They took photos of various light phenomena. Their images addressed how light interacts with textures, humans, surfaces and voids; and what Principles of Design are created by the various lighting situations they observed.

This exercise grows out of our explorations of light, encouraged by the Year 2009 Lesley Wheel Introductory Lighting Program Grant.
