I  have a background in nautical and terrestrial archaeology, historic preservation, submerged cultural resource management and maritime history. Previously I was employed as a state underwater archaeologist with the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at University of South Carolina for 13 years. My areas of fieldwork experience and research interest currently include the American South, sub Saharan Africa, and the Caribbean. I lead annual summer field schools and teaches graduate courses in coastal cultural resource management, underwater archaeology research and methods, maritime material culture, watercraft recording, and African and Caribbean maritime history and archaeology. My undergraduate courses include shipwreck archaeology, maritime history of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, and South African history.

I originate from Cape Town South Africa and sailed to the USA aboard a 36-foot sailboat with 3 friends in my late twenties. Prior to that I worked as an archaeologist for the South African Museum and the National Monuments Council. My fieldwork focused on indigenous coastal settlements, artifact assemblages, and establishing a shipwreck database for these organizations in collaboration with community dive groups. I am passionate about maritime archaeology and history and enjoy swimming, running, horse riding, mountain hiking, kayaking, playing underwater hockey and fencing.
