Within the Division of Health Sciences, there are many faculty, staff and students who create art as an avocation while pursing demanding careers in the health sciences. The opportunity to view such creativity can open new windows of appreciation for our colleagues and challenge our understanding of our own humanity.

On January 31, 2012, Laupus Library began a new exhibit series in the Evelyn Fike Laupus Gallery entitled “Art as Avocation.” The series showcases and celebrates the artistic talents and self expression of faculty, staff and students from the Division of Health Sciences by highlighting artists’ works in a gallery exhibit displayed for six to eight weeks.

Dr. Lou Everett, Professor Emeritus from the College of Nursing, presents the first exhibit in the new series. Entitled, “Humble Beginnings,” Lou expands upon works created in honor of the 50th anniversary of the College of Nursing with watercolor impressions of eastern North Carolina and the Division of Health Sciences.  The exhibit will be displayed through March 27, 2012.

Visit www.ecu.edu/laupuslibrary/events/artasavocation/ to learn more about the artist and how you might participate in future exhibitions.  We are currently seeking artists for our next exhibit planned for the fall of 2012.

The School of Dental Medicine is excited to host Your Profession Starts Here Thursday, February 9th, which will be held at the East Carolina Heart Institute at ECU.  This wonderful event, arranged by the Office for Student Affairs, invites applicants who have received offers of admission to return to East Carolina University along with family, friends, and significant others to get an in-depth look into the unique program that the School of Dental Medicine has to offer.  Some of the attendees may have received multiple offers from other dental schools and we want to ensure that they make an informed decision towards their future.  The event revolves around the prospective students and gives them a taste of what life is like when you become a Pirate.

The program will consist of faculty and student presentations, a Q&A session with deans and a panel discussion with members of the inaugural class.  Following lunch with faculty and current students, the program will conclude with a tour of the state-of-the-art simulation lab and classroom currently located in the Brody Medical Sciences building.  For these newest colleagues, we want them to know that their profession starts here.

Welcome to the inaugural entry for ECU Health Beat, the new East Carolina University Division of Health Sciences blog. As Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, it’s my pleasure to kick off this exciting new undertaking.

While ECU certainly takes pride in our strong ties to Eastern North Carolina, we are in fact working hard to improve the health of ALL North Carolinians through preventive, front line medical and dental care and by educating and training the physicians, dentists, nurses and health professionals of tomorrow. We take pride in our ability to produce health care professionals who proudly serve patients throughout our state – from the Outer Banks to the Appalachian Mountains.

ECU Health Beat will share some of our insights as we work toward a healthier North Carolina. And although much of what you read will be shared by health professionals, they aren’t the only audience.  We hope the citizens and leaders of the state visit ECU Health Beat to learn about better health, our work in the state, our cutting edge research, and the fine faculty and health professionals we get to work beside.

Although I will check in from time to time, you’ll be hearing each week from thought leaders within the Division of Health Sciences, including the Brody School of Medicine, the College of Allied Health Sciences, the College of Nursing, the School of Dental Medicine and the Laupus Library. So, bookmark this site, share with friends and colleagues, and learn more about our exciting work to improve the health of ALL North Carolinians. Great things are happening at ECU!
