Design Development

May 13, 2010

The students spent the final month of the semester developing their final designs for the space.  Most of the work was focused on the public areas of the program: reception, gallery, cafe, lounges, etc.  This was due partially to time constraints, and partially to the faculty’s interest in enhancing a sense of community within the space.

The attached pdfs are edited down from the full design presentations.  Please review the work and post comments!

Schematic Design

April 23, 2010

The students prepared 100 sketches during the schematic phase, resolving planning issues, imagining the architecture of the space, looking at furniture and details.  Here are two samples of the results.

Programming

After meeting with faculty and students, the designers in IDSN 4600 crafted a program.  This covered growth space for all staff and students, classrooms, and support spaces, including an exercise room, computer labs, and lounges.

We realized that the occupancy of the building limits the number of people to 1 per 100 square feet, so the two programs cannot occupy the building together.  Half the class developed the program and adjacencies for IDSN – Interior Design, and the others worked on MRCH – Merchandising.  Both programs are linked here.

The students used the program information to craft a narrative about the new space, and to prepare bubble diagrams and blocking plans.  Then they individually prepared blocking diagrams for the spaces.

Welcome to our Interior Design Studio

March 2, 2010

You have entered the class blog for IDSN 4600, a senior design studio in East Carolina University’s Department of Interior Design and Merchandising.

For the Spring 2010 semester, we are designing a hypothetical new home for the Interior Design and Merchandising programs, in a former tobacco warehouse here in Greenville NC. The work is posted for each assignment.
