Upcoming Medical History Interest Group Lecture on Monday January 22

The Medical History Interest Group invites you to attend “Edgar R. ‘Painless’ Parker: Vaudevillian Dentist,” presented by Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Dental Medicine, Bobby M. Collins, DDS, MS.

This lecture will discuss the persona of Edgar R. “Painless” Parker, who had a flamboyant style, struggled with organized dentistry (due to his methods, claims, and advertising), and used entrepreneurial and astute business practices. Although he consistently fought “the establishment,” who felt his very existence was beneath the dignity of the profession, Parker’s business techniques are widely practiced today.

Bobby M. Collins, DDS, MS is a Clinical Associate Professor in the ECU School of Dental Medicine. He is a board certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist and has a Master of Science in Clinical Medical Education. Dr. Collins has experience in the private practice of general dentistry, he served as a dental officer in the US Army, and was an Otolaryngic Pathology Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center before joining the faculty of the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh from 1996-2011. Dr. Collins is a history buff, a Shih Tzu dad and hopes one day to have a small zoo.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

The lecture will also feature a pop-up Edgar “Painless” Parker and dentistry.

Lectures may be video recorded.
