New from Joyner Library: iPads


Thinking about purchasing an iPad, but not sure if you’ll like it?
Borrow one from Joyner Library! iPads are now available for checkout by ECU faculty, staff, and students. These iPads allow web browsing, email access, and viewers for photos and video.

During the pilot program which begins January 24th, the lending period for these devices will be for three days.

Interested ECU affiliated users can inquire about the iPad project at the Circulation desk. Preinstalled Apps include:

Presentation Practice Room

Joyner Library’s new Presentation Practice Room has the tools to help you become a more effective public speaker.

Rehearse and record your presentation, then play it back for review. The Presentation Practice Room is located in room 1415, on the first floor between Java City and the Reference Department.

Availability can be viewed online by visiting http://blog.lib.ecu.edu/prezRoom/week.php. Reserve the room by clicking the “Request to Reserve” link.

To enter the room, present your Pirate ID to the security staff in the lobby.

When not reserved for presentation practice, the room may be used for class viewing of films from the Joyner Library DVD and VHS collection.

State of the art technology includes:

  • document and presenter cameras
  • split screen capablity
  • recording system
  • saving the video file to flash drive
  • audience seating

E-Book Reading Devices Available for Check Out

Joyner Library is offering faculty, students and staff an opportunity to check out Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble Nook electronic book readers starting in November. Right now we have 6 Kindles and 6 Nooks to lend. The titles on them to start with are a variety of popular current or classic books. Additional titles may be loaded after library users try them out and we see what people are interested in reading.

The lending period for these new devices will initially be for 2 weeks with no renewals. Only ECU affiliated users will be eligible during the pilot period.

Michael F Bassman Honors Thesis Awards

The Michael F. Bassman Honors Thesis Award was established in 2010 to recognize excellence in research and writing by students in East Carolina University’s Honors College. The award, in the amount of $500, is sponsored by Joyner Library and honors Dr. Michael F. Bassman, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages & Literatures, formerly Associate Vice Chancellor of the Honors Program, and its first Distinguished Honors Professor.

The winner of the award will be selected in early November 2010 and will receive the award at the Bassman Award ceremony to be held on December 7, 2010 at 4:00 pm
