Summer II 1

TCHR 6010 – The Learner and the Learning Environment – Learning theory, motivational theory, and assessment within school environment. Focus on cognitive, affective, and social development of students.

TCHR 6011 – The Teacher and the Teaching Experience – Teaching within school environment. Teaching cycle, teaching as a profession, culture of teaching, and general strategies for instruction.

Fall Semester 1

SPAN 6600 – Recent Trends in Foreign Language Teaching, Learning, and Acquisition – Current developments, issues, and research in teaching, learning, and acquisition of foreign languages.

12 s.h. from the following (9 s.h. must be at the 6000 level or above):
SPAN 5340 – Advanced Translation I – P: SPAN 4340. Practice of translation skills with greater variety of style and subject matter.
SPAN 5440 – Contemporary Issues of the Hispanic World – May be repeated for maximum of 6 s.h. with change of topic. P: Consent of instructor. Selected events, artistic trends, and currents of thought that significantly contribute to life in contemporary Hispanic societies.
SPAN 5445 – Hispanic Cinema – May be repeated for maximum of 6 s.h. with change of topic. P: Consent of instructor. Films as cultural product reflecting social, political, and economic realities. Power to represent, inform, and create. Viewed and discussed by representative directors.

SPAN 5550 – Hispanic Women Writers – May be repeated for maximum of 6 s.h. with change of topic. May not be repeated for credit by students in WOST program. P: Consent of instructor. In-depth study and discussion of representative writings by women in Hispanic countries from variety of genres. Emphasis on relationships between society and origin, content, and form of texts.
SPAN 5700 – Special Topics In Hispanic Studies – May be repeated for maximum of 6 s.h. with change of topic. P: Consent of instructor. Topics relating to language, literature, culture, or civilization of Spain or Latin America.
SPAN 6000 – Advanced Language Skills I – In-depth exploration of varieties and styles of modern Spanish usage.
SPAN 6001 – Advanced Language Skills II – Continuation of SPAN 6000.
SPAN 6100 – Cultural Studies, Spain – History, culture, and civilization of Spain. In-depth exploration of special topic or theme.

SPAN 6200 – Readings in Spanish Literature – Exhaustive study of masterpieces of Spanish literature from Middle Ages to present.
SPAN 6202 – Readings in Twentieth-Century Spanish-American Literature – Literary works by recognized Spanish-American writers of twentieth century. Major artistic movements and socioeconomic/political realities of various regions.
SPAN 6400 – Spanish Linguistics – Introduces nature of grammar and approaches to description of Spanish grammar. Emphasis on Chomsky’s Principles and Parameters Model.
SPAN 6521 – Special Readings – Intensive reading in area where student may already have credit.
SPAN 6522 – Special Readings – Intensive reading in area where student may already have credit.
SPAN 6523 – Special Readings – Intensive reading in area where student may already have credit.

Spring Semester 1

TCHR 6020 – MAT Classroom Management – Concurrent internship experience required. P: TCHR 6010, TCHR 6011. Roles and responsibilities of teacher in organizing and managing classroom setting. Approaches to handling discipline problems.

SPAN 6024 – MAT Internship – P: TCHR 6010, TCHR 6011. Supervised teaching in appropriate subject and level classroom. Emphasis on reflective decision-making.

Summer I 1

TCHR 6030 – Literacy Development in the Area Classroom – May receive credit for one of READ 5317; TCHR 6030. Development of literacy abilities in content area classrooms. Identification of literacy requisites, evaluation of content area materials, and assessment of student competencies. Development of strategies and teaching materials to enhance learning.

SPED 6008 – Linking Research and Practice in Special Education – P: Admission to master of arts in teaching (special education); TCHR 6010, TCHR 6011. Analysis of the role of research in education of students with mild or moderate impairments.
