Tips For Success

A Guide for Success in Math 1065

  • Always come to each class prepared and participate.
  • Always complete your minimum CAVE hour requirement each week. Some students will need extra support to succeed in this course. Therefore, you may need to complete more than the minimum number of hours in the CAVE to master the course topics.
  • You should not complete all 3 CAVE hours in one visit. It is recommended that you spread out your CAVE hours into 30 minute – 1 hour visits.
  • Start assignments early and do not wait until deadlines are near to begin working on assignments
  • You should expect to spend several hours each week working on your assignments in ALEKS. It is recommended that you spend a minimum of 1-2 hours each day in ALEKS to learn all the required topics.
  • Ask for help! If you are struggling with a problem in ALEKS ask a CAVE tutor for help or schedule some one on one tutoring with the Pirate Academic Success Center.
  • Follow the below guidelines on how best to prepare for tests and the final exam.
  • Keep a positive attitude about your ability to succeed!

How to Best Prepare for Tests and the Final Exam

  • You should prepare for tests, as well as the final exam, by working and then reworking the corresponding practice tests in ALEKS.
  • You should begin working on a practice test as soon as it is available in ALEKS.
  • When working on a practice test, you should take it in a test setting using only blank paper, a non-graphing calculator, and something to write with.
  • It is recommended that you follow the following process when preparing for a test: take practice test in a test setting, go to CAVE and ask a CAVE tutor to review up to 5 problems you missed, take practice again in a test setting, go to the CAVE and ask a CAVE tutor to review up to 5 problems you missed, … continue this process until you can do well (70% or higher) on two attempts in a row (in a test setting).
  • If you can do well (70% or higher) on two attempts in a row (in a test setting), then you should be ready for your actual test.
  • Get a good night’s rest the night before a test.
  • Keep a positive attitude about your ability to succeed!
