I am an Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology at East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina, United States. I earned my Ph.D. in Sociology from the New School for Social Research, New York, New York.

My current research is on diversity and marginality in the United States and in countries experiencing democratic transformations. I am particularly concerned with political contexts of culture, and have most recently conducted research on the intersections between gender and immigration, collective memory in East-Central Europe, local and transnational human-rights movements, gender-based violence in global perspective, and African American culture and collective memory.

I have served on the faculties of Gettysburg College, University of Gdansk in Gdansk, Poland, Central European University in Warsaw, Poland, and West Virginia University. I also have a background in nonprofit project management.
