Business Services Names Seven Treasured Pirates

Seven East Carolina University staff members in Business Services were honored recently as Treasured Pirates. Beth Breidigam, Steven Daughtry, Travian Edwards, Ervin Mills, Cody Peters, David Speight, and Nikki Teel are the honorees representing 1 Card, Central Stores & Receiving, Dowdy Student Stores, Health Sciences Bookstore, Mail Services, and University Printing & Graphics.

Three of the awardees were recognized for Outstanding Delivery of Service. Two received the Treasured Pirate Award for Enhancing Employee Morale, along with one each for Effective Leadership and Display of Creativity and Initiative.

Outstanding Delivery of Service

Travian Edwards, center, accepts the Treasured Pirate Award from Willie Lee, right, director of Auxiliary Services, and Scott Buck, left, associate vice chancellor for Business Services.

Travian Edwards received the Treasured Pirate Award for Outstanding Delivery of Service. He is in his fourth year as a mail courier for Mail Services, and was recognized for significantly reducing the number of student customer complaints and his ability to follow through until the job is completed.

“What I like most about my job is the everyday interaction with people,” Edwards said. “My main responsibility is providing assistance to parents and students with mail being shipped to and from campus, providing a smooth transition from one point to another.”

According to Thomas Hardy, Mail Services manager, Edwards is continually coming up with faster ways to get his work done and is always willing to be cross-trained for other duties.

“Travian is a classic example of how a positive attitude and strong team spirit can contribute to daily success in the accomplishment of a goal,” Hardy said.

“Ervin demonstrates a great attitude and willingness to work,” said Elaine Garris, assistant director of Storeroom Operations/Fixed Assets. “He has had to double up on work for months on two separate occasions, and did so with a great attitude. Ervin is a great example for new guys coming in with his great attitude and willingness to work.”

David Speight

David Speight

David Speight works in the stockroom at Dowdy Student Store in the shipping and receiving area, and also serves as the store’s courier. “David does an outstanding job making store deliveries and pickups,” said Bryan Tuten, Dowdy Student Stores director. “He is efficient and always has a great attitude.”

Speight has worked at Dowdy for the past three years. He holds an associates degree in design drafting from Wilson Community College and also studied drafting at ECU.

Enhancing Employee Morale
Beth Breidigam

Beth Breidigam

Beth Breidigam is one of only two full-time employees at the Health Sciences Bookstore. “I spend most of my time operating the cash register, assisting customers and stocking the store,” Breidigam said. “I also repair Littmann stethoscopes, maintain online ordering forms for white coats and scrubs, and make sure our snack selection has plenty of variety.”

She was recognized for her positive attitude and vibrant personality. “Everyone loves to talk with Beth,” said Bryan Tuten, Dowdy Student Stores director. “She is also the costumed reindeer at Dowdy’s Holiday Sale; she is great with customers, especially children.”

A native of Pennsylvania, Breidigam graduated from ECU in 2012 with a BS degree in political science. She has worked at the bookstore for two-and-a-half years. “I absolutely love East Carolina University, so being able to go to work every day at one of my favorite places is a huge plus,” she said.

Nikki Teel

Nikki Teel

Nikki Teel is the lithographer at University Printing & Graphics, a job she has held for 19 years. She was recognized for the time she devotes to the Harris Building staff.

“Nikki is always involved when our employees get together,” said Karen Simmons, assistant director of marketing for Business Services. “She initiated our monthly birthday celebrations and continues to help plan them. She also plans the annual Christmas luncheon and is the building’s State Employees Combined Campaign representative.”

As lithographer, Teel is responsible for producing the plates for UP&G’s five different printing presses using the highly specialized direct-to-plate Agfa/Avalon system. This involves correcting files and adjusting graphics, including color separating, arranging printer spreads, and setting knockouts and traps prior to the final output.

“I also design, layout and revise printing material such as: newsletters, brochures, flyers, postcards, posters, certificates and stationery items,” Teel said. Customer service is a big part of her job as well. “I meet and talk with internal and external customers to determine and attentively respond to their printing needs,” she said.

He also works with the textbook department to approve textbook adoptions.

“Steven is a very good leader, hard worker, communicator, and team player,” said Bryan Tuten Dowdy Student Stores manager. “He leads his team of student and temporary workers very well. They all know their assignments and understand the urgencies and the need to provide outstanding customer service.”

As technical manager for 1 Card, Cody Peters oversees building access installations, assists with database management, server maintenance, equipment testing, programming system parameters, and assists with the day to day operations for card production. “I really enjoy the variety as well as the unique and challenging aspects of the job,” Peters said.
