Join us for the “A Red Carpet Affair” (A Pre-Motown Event)

The Organization of African American Staff  presents “A Red Carpet Affair” (Pre-Motown Event) dinner banquet and awards taking place on Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 4:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. at the East Carolina Heart Institute. The Banquet and Motown Package Tickets are $23 for ECU students and $35 for faculty, staff and the public.  After  Monday, February 18, 2013, prices increase to $28.00 for ECU Students and $40.00 for faculty, staff, and the public. The keynote speaker for the evening is Ms. Lynnette Taylor, 6:00 PM Anchor for WITN-TV.  The African American Awards of Excellence will be presented as part of the evening celebration.   Everyone is invited to attend.  Tickets can be purchased through the ECU Central Ticket Office in Mendenhall Student Center or ordered online<>.  More information can be found at OAAS Website<>.

Founders Day/Awards Day Convocation

Founders Day/Awards Day Convocation set

The fourth annual Founders Day/University Awards Day Convocation is set for Wednesday, May 1 at 9:00 a.m. in Hendrix Theater.  The convocation provides an opportunity to celebrate the establishment of East Carolina Teachers Training School on March 8, 1907 — 106 years ago and to celebrate the recipients of the University’s top awards in teaching, research/creative achievement, scholarship of engagement, the Centennial Awards for Excellence, and induction into the Servire Society for students, faculty, and staff.

This is held on “reading day” so there are no class conflicts.  There will be a reception immediately following the convocation.

Founders Day events have not been announced due to ongoing planning.

The Children of SPA Employees Scholarship: Now accepting applications

The Children of SPA Employees Scholarship was established to assist deserving children of SPA Employees with tuition assistance while attending East Carolina University. The Scholarship shall be awarded to undergraduate students who are children (including stepchildren and adopted children) of currently employed SPA Employees at East Carolina University; who have been accepted for admission or who are enrolled full-time at East Carolina University. 

Other criteria in order of priority are:

  • Students must be pursuing first undergraduate degree.
  • Minimum 3.0 projected GPA for incoming freshman or actual GPA for current students at ECU.
  • Students must have demonstrated leadership potential.
  • Students must have demonstrated community involvement and extracurricular activities.
  • Any other criteria determine appropriate by the Scholarship Selection Committee.

 The Scholarship award shall be for the amount of $600 annually ($300 per semester) or up to the amount of annual income on the endowment. The Foundation has the discretion to determine if the fund will allow more than one scholarship to be awarded.

An online application must be filled out using the following link.  Applications should be completed and submitted by April 5th, 2013. East Carolina University’s Office of Student Financial Aid upon the recommendation of the Scholarship Selection Committee shall make final approval for each recipient. Recommendations shall be made for the following school year on or before June 1st.

 The scholarship award will be for one (1) academic year (two (2) semesters). The Scholarship is not automatically renewable; however recipients may reapply for the Scholarship in subsequent years.  The East Carolina University Office of Student Financial Aid upon recommendation by the Children of SPA Employees Scholarship Selection Committee shall cancel the Scholarship if the recipient fails to meet the standards previously described.  Any funds awarded but not yet disbursed at that time, shall be retained in the scholarship account. If termination occurs during the fall semester, an award may be made for the spring term to an eligible candidate, at the discretion of the Scholarship Selection Committee.

The Staff Assembly passed resolution 12-01A

The Staff Assembly passed resolution 12-01A “Resolution Regarding Leave for Victims of Disasters for UNC Employees”. The resolution respectfully requests UNC GA to petition OSP to rewrite the current leave policy to allow state employees who have experienced a loss of property due to a declared disaster be able to:
Use all accrued leave balances including sick leave
Allow shared leave donations as a compassionate exemption to the State Personnel Act for this circumstance
Allow affected and non-affected State employees to use their Community Service Leave to assist with disaster relief in affected areas without requiring the work to the through a charitable organization.
The resolution also requests UNC GA request OSP to look into the possibility of creating an Emergency Disaster Leave policy – similar to the Virginia Department of Human Resources Management.

Second Annual Empty Bowls event Thursday, February 7, 11:30 am – 2:00 pm Mendenhall Student Center Great Rooms

 Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to raise money to combat hunger while reminding participants of all the empty bowls in the world. Guests purchase $15 tickets for a meal of soup and bread, along with a handmade bowl.  At ECU, the bowls are created and donated through the ECU Ceramics Guild, which is sponsoring the project along with ECU Campus Living and Dining Services. Local businesses are providing food and beverages.

All funds raised will be donated to the Greenville Food Bank.
