Time to Vote for New Staff Senators

Every spring the Staff Senate elects new senators and alternate senators. This year over 20 seats will be filled across eight divisions. All candidates were nominated by their peers and approved by their supervisor and Human Resources.

Each division is allotted senate seats based on the number of staff. One senator is elected for every 100 staff members. Each division also elects up to two alternate senators. The alternate senators are active delegates and participate in Senate and committee meetings. Senators are elected to a two year term while alternate senators serve a one year term. The Staff Senate reports to the Chancellor and works hard to represent the best interests of SPA, CSS, and EPA non-faculty employees. We also assist in communicating issues and activities affecting staff members and encourage a sense of community among all University employees.

You may wonder what the Staff Senate does for you?  Just a recap of the activities the Staff Senate took part in during the 2013-2014 session:

  • Worked with University Administrators to help make the Adverse Weather and Closure messages more clear for staff
  • Organized the Health Walk on the Health Sciences Campus in the fall
  • Organized the Staff Appreciation Week activities and give-aways for Spring 2014 (to include the Health Walk on East Campus)
  • Participated in many volunteer activities across Pitt County
  • Worked with the Chancellor and Executive Committee to re-work the Winter Break Schedule in order to maximize the time staff have off
  • Provided an entire Thanksgiving meal (and a grocery gift card) for a very deserving family that was struggling with medical issues
  • Worked with Human Resources regarding the new 24 month probation.  Staff Senate ensured that staff could use leave and were eligible to take advantage of the Free Class benefit at the date of hire (not after the probationary period was over)
  • Worked with ECU Human Resources to ensure Staff Senators were allotted time to serve in the Staff Senate, as well as 30 additional hours to use in volunteer service to ECU (Pirate Boarding Crews, Midnight Madness, etc…)
  • Working with our ECU Human Resources and the Office of State Human Resources to get the 3rd free class reinstated
  • Organized Staff Forums in order to communicate what is happening on campus with staff
  • Worked with multiple committees regarding the future of East Carolina University (Committee on Fiscal Sustainability, Committee on the Status of Woman, Strategic Planning Committee, Parking Committee, etc…)

The Staff Senate is a terrific way for every employee to become more engaged with the University and REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE!  If you are not currently a part of the Staff Senate, please consider running for a Senator in Spring, 2015 (click here to learn more about the duties and responsibilities of an ECU Staff Senator), until then, please take a moment to vote for those employees that are currently running for the ECU Staff Senate.

As someone that is serving their 1st year on the ECU Staff Senate – this experience has been tremendously rewarding.  I have had multiple face to face interactions with Chancellor Ballard, Dr. Locklear, Dr. Niswander, my Division Vice Chancellor, and many of the other Divisional Vice Chancellors.  I feel that I have had important input on multiple Human Resources issues, and policies and procedures that directly impact staff.

Hooray for the red, orange, green, and blue! Enjoy The Taste Of Eating Right

Let’s Celebrate Food!  Hooray for the red, orange, green, and blue! Living well means to make healthier choices. Healthier options don’t have to taste bland or bore you. There is no time like the present to start selecting better options for our families.  The variety of fruits and vegetables can be plentiful with the start of Spring.

Our happiest memories always incorporate food to celebrate the moment.  Make those memories colorful by choosing brightly colored foods.  Colorful foods are more visually appealing and your body reaps the benefits by lowering cholesterol, reducing health risks, increasing energy levels, and reduces the signs of aging. Who doesn’t want to look younger?

So tempt your taste buds by mixing it up a bit on your food choices. Think in color!

Red/Pink:  Apples, cherries, strawberries, and tomatoes are your first thoughts and they are great choices. Here are some additional great choices.  Beets, raspberries, red onions, rhubarb, red peppers, red onions, red grapes, cranberries, red potatoes,  pink grapefruit, watermelons, and pomegranates.

Orange:  There is the regular navel orange, but so many other varieties exist. There are clementines, mandarins, tangerines, and blood oranges.  Orange peppers are so much sweeter than the green peppers.  Apricots are loaded with fiber and are a great snack. Sweet potatoes make amazing fries. Mangoes and cantaloupes are great choices. Perhaps the world’s greatest super food is the carrot.

Green:  Everyone’s first thought would be broccoli and green beans and they are great, but let’s broaden our color spectrum.  Kiwi, Asian vegetables,  brussels sprouts, cabbage, cucumber, celery, avocado, green apples, honeydew melon, limes, asparagus, spinach (raw is best), green grapes, green pears, sugar snap peas, zucchini, are all great options.  There is more to life than iceberg lettuce: Arugula, Baby Red Tango, Endive, Green Leaf, Radicchio, Romaine, Boston or Bibb lettuce (sweet flavor and texture), Summercrisp, just to name a few.

Blue/Purple: Blueberries, blackberries, plums, eggplant, elderberries, purple grapes, figs, stone fruit, and prunes.

*Always wash your vegetables and ready-to-eat fruits.

How do you jazz up the flavor? With herbs and spices!
The following flavor and food combinations are adapted from information provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and have the added benefit of making meat, poultry, fish, and veggies savory without adding salt.

Convenience is important too during the busy work week. Realize that not everything needs to be made from scratch. It is possible to pull a heart healthy and delicious meal together in less than 30 minutes! Use the My Plate tool as your guide, including fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, low fat dairy and heart healthy oils. This can be as easy as microwaving your favorite frozen vegetables, dicing up some sweet strawberries to place on your arugula salad, broiling or grilling your favorite lean protein (marinated chicken, pork loin chops, lemon thyme salmon), and adding a piece of whole grain artisan bread. Throw in a little seasoned olive oil for bread dipping and you have yourself a meal! Check out “Eat Right Nutrition Tips”.

22nd Annual Powwow

The East Carolina Native American Organization is presenting the 22nd Annual Powwow on Saturday, March 29th from noon – 6:00 p.m.  at 10th Street and College Hill.  This event is free and open to the public!

There will be two dance specials in honor of Matt Chavis – Men’s Traditional and Smoke Dance.

Dennis Zotigh will be the Master of Ceremonies; Spencer Jacobs is the Head Man; Olivia Richardson is the Head Lady; Thunder Voice and Stoney Creek will Host Drums; and Brian Richardson will be the Arena Director.

If you don’t know, a Powwow is a traditional Native American gathering for dancing/dance competitions, singing, socializing and eating.  The dances performed are sacred symbols of the Native American culture and traditions that have been preserved for centuries.  At times, the regalia and/or ornaments signify special events or honors in a person’s life; such as this Powwow, honoring Matt Chavis, mamber of the Lumbee Tribe, ECU Alumni and one of the founding fathers of Epsilon Chi Nu, which is the first Native American Fraternity in the nation (Established at East Carolina University in 1996, Incorporated in 2003).

This is sure to be a spectacular event!  Hope to see you there!

Staff Appreciation Week April 7-11th, 2014

Mark your calendars, the 2014 ECU Staff Appreciation Week will be April 7th – 11th.  The Staff Senate Rewards and Recognition Committee along with our Staff Senate Chair and Chair-Elect have been working very hard to ensure this year’s celebration is a GREAT one!

There are many local businesses in and around Greenville that appreciate the staff at ECU as well, so we would like to ask for everyone’s help in getting the awareness out there, so they can help us celebrate!  If you know of any local businesses you would like us to contact, please send us their name and contact information (if available) and we will be sure to touch base with them, or if you would prefer, you can pass along the Staff Senate email address staffsenate@ecu.edu, and the business can email us with the details of the discount,  promotion, or donation they would like to offer.

Luck of the Irish Be With Ya’!

Monday, March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day!

Saint Patrick’s Day, is only a “legal” holiday in Ireland, but is widely celebrated around the globe and even at the International Space Station!  In the United States, St. Patrick’s Day has been observed as a celebration of Irish and Irish American culture since the 18th century!

Celebrations include wearing green, eating Irish food, drinking green beer, displays of shamrocks, leprechauns, pots of gold, religious observances, and parades. It’s popularity has been credited to the fact that it occurs during the Lenten Season and all Lenten restrictions on food and drink are suspended for the day in order to celebrate the “Feast of Saint Patrick.”  The lift of the Lenten restrictions is said to have “encouraged and propagated” the consumption of alcohol on St. Patty’s Day.

One of the biggest American displays of St. Patrick’s Day Pride is in Chicago, where they dye the Chicago River Green for the day!

Ever wonder where all these traditions about green, eating corned beef, pinching people and leprechauns come from?  Well here you go….

Wearing Green – There are many theories about wearing the color green:  It’s one of the colors of the Irish Flag; Ireland is called the “Emerald Isle,” Shamrocks are green, and green is the color of Spring.  Fun fact, long ago, the color associated with St. Patrick’s Day was blue, the color associated with the Order of St. Patrick, but in 1681, green was adopted as the national color of Ireland and people started wearing green.

Shamrocks – Sacred plant in ancient Ireland because it symbolized rebirth and the arrival of Spring.

Corned Beef and Cabbage – Cabbage has been a long standing staple in the Irish diet (along with potatoes), but it was traditionally it was eaten with Irish Bacon on St. Patrick’s Day.  Once in America, many Irish immigrants couldn’t afford bacon, so they used the cheaper corned beef as a substitute.

Leprechauns – Linked back to Celtic beliefs in fairies, tiny men and women that had magical powers used for good or evil.  Leprechauns were cranky, short-bodied people, responsible for mending other fairies shoes and they were known for their trickery which was often used to protect their long-fabled treasure (pot of gold).

Pinching – Is only practiced as an American tradition!  It was once thought that wearing green made you invisible to leprechauns – fairy creatures who would pinch anyone not wearing green. People began pinching those who didn’t wear green as a reminder that leprechauns would sneak up and pinch green-abstainers.

So, there you go…St. Patrick’s Day debunked.  Hope you all have a fun day filled with trickery, pots of gold and plenty of green food and drink!

Janice Hardison Faulkner Gallery

A flagship project that started in the Fall of 2012 is now a reality.  Tonight at 5:30 p.m., a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place to honor and celebrate ECU alumna Janice Hardison Faulkner.

Speakers at the ceremony include former North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt Jr., the Provost, Marilyn Sheerer, Austin Bunch, Janice Lewis, Interim Dean of Joyner Library, and Michael Priddy.

Joyner Library was selected as the space to house the Janice Hardison Faulkner Gallery. The second floor 3,700-square-foot gallery area will serve as an art and exhibit area. At the entrance of the gallery, a tribute case honors her dedication and outstanding achievements.   State of the art technology includes two 80-inch LCD panels for digital art, two projectors with 100-inch retractable screens and 16 ceiling speakers. Art will be displayed with an AS Hanging System, which uses cables and hooks to hang traditionally framed and non-traditional works.

In an interview with ECU News Services published in December 2012, Faulkner said of the project: “One of the first things we do when we’re separated from home as college students is to build a little nest, a place that is familiar and comfortable, and meets the requirements you’re looking for like a quiet place to study or a place to put your feet up while you read. So it (the gallery) has an ambiance that is missing from the strictly academic structures (on campus).”

Among her many accolades, Faulkner was recognized by ECU in 1993 with its Outstanding Alumni Award and in 2007 as one of ECU’s 100 Incredible Women by the ECU Women’s Roundtable. She received the Jarvis Medal in 2009, East Carolina’s highest honor, and in 2012 received the State of North Carolina Award, the highest civilian award given by the state.

Janice Lewis states, “It is a unique and inviting venue for lectures, programs, conferences and receptions. It is a space for experimentation with the new forms of displaying art using the technologies embedded in the gallery. It is a place where students can study, relax and learn. It is a tangible recognition of the life-long contributions Janice Hardison Faulkner has made to East Carolina University and the state of North Carolina.”

Leadership According to Ballard

On February 26th, Dr. Ballard gave his presentation “Leadership According to Ballard” – part of the Professional Development Series sponsored by the ECU Office of Student Affairs.

Dr. Ballard facilitated an innovative and interesting session; attendees were a conglomeration of faculty and staff, with approximately 60 people in attendance.

Dr. Ballard spoke about the value of people skills and shared some of his own leadership experiences in honing them. Having a mentor and finding those to
mentor is important. Leadership is much more about people skills than about technical skill. He cited personal mentors from the early years of his academic
career in Oklahoma to former US Senator Margaret Chase Smith. Leadership is a combination of failures and successes, and is developed by character and
integrity.

His most passionate point was that a leader who has high integrity and high courage can accomplish great things. He also reiterated his deep belief that leaders are made (or grown) not born.

Presidential Proclamation — Women’s History Month, 2014

Women's Historical ParkThe First Wave, a group of 19 life-sized bronze statues, depicts the organizers and supporters of the First Women’s Rights Convention at Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y.

Every March in the United States, National Women’s History Month celebrates the contributions of women to the nation’s history and culture. This year’s theme honoring women is “Celebrating Women Of Character, Courage, and Commitment”, according to the National Women’s History Project, an educational nonprofit group based in California.

The first steps toward successfully honoring women came in 1980 when President Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980 as National Women’s History Week:

“From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.

As Dr. Gerda Lerner has noted, “Women’s History is Women’s Right.” – It is an essential and indispensable heritage from which we can draw pride, comfort, courage, and long-range vision.”

In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9.  This law requested the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate activities and ceremonies.  President Reagan then issued Presidential Proclamation 5619 proclaiming March 1987 as “Women’s History Month” and calling upon all Americans to mark the month with observances to honor the achievements of American women.

“Throughout our Nation’s history, American women have led movements for social and economic justice, made groundbreaking scientific discoveries, enriched our culture with stunning works of art and literature, and charted bold directions in our foreign policy. They have served our country with valor, from the battlefields of the Revolutionary War to the deserts of Iraq and mountains of Afghanistan. During Women’s History Month, we recognize the victories, struggles, and stories of the women who have made our country what it is today.”
