First New Student Orientation and Student Profiles: Getting to Know Some Pirates!

Hello Pirates!  The first new student orientation took place last week and many exciting events were happening around campus! It was good to see some fresh faces and some action on campus as the first summer session and classes were wrapping up!

New students and their families strolled around campus and took part in what I consider to be the initiation for beginning life at ECU!  At orientation students are able to get acquainted with the campus for the first time by partaking in a series of events, like touring the campus with orientation leaders where they can see where different classes are.  Different information sessions are held where they can learn new techniques to managing college life, including being safe on campus and career preparation.  Students are able to speak with professors and deans of the different colleges at ECU to learn about their major or intended majors.

Orientation is also for new students to get a first look at what living at ECU is like!  They are able to sleep in dorm rooms and enjoy fun events like watching hypnotist, Michael C. Anthony!  I watched Anthony’s show last week, which I also saw as a freshman at orientation….it really gets students excited about coming to ECU and is a great way for students to interact with each other!

I was also able to talk to some orientation leaders & new students who shared why they love ECU and were excited during orientation!

Orientation Leader’s name: Carolina Listoe

Year: Junior

Major: Early education

What do you remember about your freshman orientation?

I remember being very overwhelmed because of how many people there were and how many leaders there were doing great things on campus! It was overwhelming to go from being just a high school student to being on my own.

How have you changed since your freshman year?

I have definitely become more involved.  I am not as timid or shy as I used to be and I’ve learned from different organizations how to be a leader and role model.  Overall, I am more involved, outgoing and personable since freshman year.

Why did you want to be an orientation leader?

I wanted to be a good role model for the incoming freshman and make them feel like they could see people they knew around campus and get help without feeling lost.  I love being involved and helping people reach their goals.  I know I wouldn’t have reached some of mine without certain people and I would like to be that for others!

Calculus!

Why did you choose to come to ECU?

I love the family aspects of ECU and my whole family has gone to school here.  It has been in my family as long as I can remember.
