There are many opportunities at East Carolina University to get students out in the world on study abroad trips. Students have the option to study in the fall semester, spring semester and over the summer.
Last summer I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Italy through ECU’s Italy Intensives Program. This trip was an experience of a lifetime and was one of my favorite parts of college!
The ECU program Italy Intensives is a month long journey around Italy where students are able to travel and meet with editors, journalists, and other communications professionals. Last summer we travelled to Venice, Certaldo, Florence, Siena, Chianti, San Gimignano, Vultera, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Vatican City, and Rome! Whenever we were not travelling we were studying in a small town about an hour from Florence called Certaldo Alto.
While studying in Italy I took an Art and Design course, and an International News Communication course. In my International News Communications course we were given the opportunity to meet with Massimo Lucchesi, the former president of a journalism guild in Italy. Lucchesi spoke with the students and told them what it takes to pursue journalism as a career in Italy.
We also met with Rose Mackworth-Young, an editor in Florence for the English-language news magazine, The Florentine. The Florentine likes to focus on wine, Tuscany, food, events, sports, fashion, recipes, life in Tuscany, feature articles, and various other topics.
Below are some pictures all of the places we travelled to. For more information on ECU’s Italy Intensives Program and all of the other programs available click the links below!
