ECU grad lands prestigious internship
The pomp and circumstance of graduation had barely ended when East Carolina graduate Ryan Clancy moved to St. Petersburg, Florida for an internship with the Tampa Bay Times.
The Leesburg, Virginia native received a Dow Jones News Fund copy editing internship at the Pulitzer-Prize winning newspaper, which is also home to PolitiFact, a fact-checking website that measures the accuracy of claims by elected officials and others in American politics.
“I am just ecstatic that Ryan was chosen for one of these internships,” said ECU Student Media Director John Harvey, who serves as adviser to The East Carolinian. “They are hard to get and the application process is rigorous.”
Before Clancy started, the former East Carolinian editor attended a weeklong boot camp with other interns at Penn State University, receiving extra training on copy editing, headline writing and other skills.
“I’ve already made a lot of progress, and I hope to get even better by the time I leave. Some of the other copy editors have been here 20 years, so I’m really trying to learn as much as I can from their experience,” he said.
Clancy edits stories for grammar, spelling and style and also checks names for misspellings. He ensures articles adhere to the Tampa Bay Times style, which is slightly different from the AP Style he has used.
“I also write headlines for all the articles I edit,” Clancy said. “One of the coolest parts of this internship is getting to see a headline I wrote in the paper the next day.”
Clancy said the skills he learned at the campus newspaper and in ECU’s School of Communication prepared him for the job. “Working for The East Carolinian helped me learn so much about every aspect of newspapers and journalism,” he said. “Just having that experience as a reporter and as editor-in-chief was incredibly beneficial.”
Harvey and Mary Tucker-McLaughlin, associate professor of communication, coordinated the Dow Jones News Fund application at ECU this year.
