Framing Essay for the Portfolio Option
The framing essay serves as an introduction to the Portfolio, an option for completing the Comprehensive Assessment Project requirement. Under the direction of a committee, students revise 6-8 seminar papers or projects that they have done throughout their coursework. As a part of the revision process, students should consider how the pieces they have written and edited connect to each other. They should ask: How do the pieces reflect what I have learned in the program? What are some recurring themes or points of emphasis in the writing? What theoretical approaches have I demonstrated, and what assumptions underlie my scholarship?
The essay reflects critically on students’ own writing and study, reveals what they most want to take away from their study, and in a sense assesses their own learning. As a frame, the essay introduces and comments on the pieces they have selected as representing their work as students of MTL.
