ECU Joins Eduroam

Enrollment is easy! Five steps in five minutes

IMPORTANT!  Macintosh users who log in with their PirateID should continue to use Buccaneer or Pirates until further notice. Wireless Windows systems that log in to the INTRA domain will automatically enroll on Tuesday, August 30. This process outlined here is for personal devices only.

During fall 2016, ECU begins the transition from the Buccaneer, Pirates and Campus Living wireless networks to the eduroam (education roaming) wireless network, a secure world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Many institutions are now members, including our own UNC university system.

A registered user/device has an automatic internet connection wherever eduroam is available. For example, if an NCSU professor visits the ECU campus, s/he can join the ECU eduroam network using NCSU credentials.

Once you complete enrollment (called onboarding), your access is good for four years, and you have internet connectivity wherever eduroam is available. See this US map for current participating institutions.

The eduroam rollout comes just as ITCS is wrapping up a major WiFi equipment upgrade on both campuses. Hundreds of network switches to increase bandwidth with new and upgraded access points in nearly 30 locations increase coverage and capacity. With an easier process through eduroam and updated WiFi hardware, ECU is more than ready to accommodate its 23,000 daily concurrent users.

When do I enroll?

Faculty and staff.  Staff who access any ECU wireless network using a personal Mac or Windows laptop, tablet or phone (Android, iOS, Windows) can enroll now (recommended) or continue to use their current network until the end of spring 2017.

What happens to the current wireless networks?

Campus Living will be decommissioned (turned off) AND NO LONGER AVAILABLE on August 18, 2016.  Buccaneer and Pirates will be available through spring 2017.  During summer 2017, ECU completes the transition so there will only be three wireless networks available to ECU users:

  1. eduroam for ECU students, staff and faculty (PirateID required)
  2. ecu-guest for campus visitors (no PirateID/no eduroam/must be sponsored by an ECU user)
  3. ecu-onboard for onboarding purposes only (new user/new device/PirateID required)

Is there an advantage to enrollment now?

Yes! Users only onboard once and access is good for four years.  An email confirms successful enrollment, and users are reminded in four years to re-enroll.  Eduroam replaces the previous multi-step “posturing” process with just five easy steps.

How do I Enroll?

To get started, you need your registered PirateID and passphrase. Next, follow this five-step, five-minute process:

  1. Navigate to onboard.ecu.edu.  How?
    • cell service
    • current internet access – Buccaneer, Pirates, Campus Living
    • ecu-onboard network – join if you have no internet access – open a browser and go to www.ecu.edu
  2. Click the onboarding icon.
  3. Confirm your OS and click the JoinNow button.
  4. Download and run the JoinNow wizard (each device must be enrolled).
  5. Authenticate with your PirateID and passphrase.

You receive an auto-generated email to confirm your enrollment and can now join the ECU eduroam network.
