Let’s Talk

In case you missed this

Teams – The Teams desktop app screen sharing design is improved! During mid-March 2021, Microsoft 365 is rolling out an updated screen share menu so you find content more quickly and sharing a screen, the whiteboard or PowerPoint slides is much quicker.

WebEx – Available now! Meeting organizers have a new option when setting up breakout sessions. Along with the 1) Assign participants automatically and 2) Assign participants manually options, there’s not a third option: 3) Let participants choose any session.

Updated Collaboration Features for Teams and Webex

Microsoft Teams has tweaked the desktop app to improve your meeting experience. Most of the updates, like pop-out meetings, can be switched on now (see steps in the above link)

Other features are being fine-tuned and will launch within the next few days.

Cisco Webex Experience

Webex launched the new 40.9 in-meeting experience, and  updates the interface through several optimized and improved features.

Intuitive audio and video settings preview

The audio selection menu has been moved to a more prominent position over the Join Meeting button. Now you’re less likely to forget checking audio settings BEFORE joining your meeting.

Also, the larger preview window lets you actually check your “meeting face.”

Need to Meet? – Try One of These

WebEx – access directly from ECU hamburger menu or the app, schedule a meeting or start directly once you access.  Recordings can be recorded and shared.

Teams

Microsoft Teams boasts many more convenient messaging features, like

  • Individual chat. Message any of your contacts and pick up the conversation anytime, anywhere even if it was last week, last month or this morning.
  • Teams chat. Create a “channel” within a project team so everyone can trade ideas together.
  • Office app integration. See this Microsoft article for both desktop and mobile app features.
  • Share Files. Just like Skype, you can attach files to a chat.

Big Blue (Canvas) – The Conferences interface is displayed using BigBlueButton’s HTML5 conferencing system. Conferences interface to moderate and participate in the conference. Any user who starts a conference or an instructor who joins the conference will be given moderator permissions. Moderators can demote other moderators to viewers.

New Year, New Stuff – Skype vs Webex

Not really new but a good explanation of two tools available to use for “meeting online”.

With both WebEx Cloud and Skype for Business available to ECU users, how do you pick the right online meeting solution? Both tools share collaboration tools, audio and video options, scheduling through Outlook and a “Meet Now” feature.

Skype:

Skype is part of the Office 365 download and is available to students, faculty and staff. It is currently ECU’s standard for instant messaging and desktop sharing. It is used to determine another user’s “presence” through Outlook – not available (red), green (available), yellow (away from the computer).

Skype is an excellent choice for desktop sharing and is approved to discuss FERPA information – while holding online office hours, for example. But, Skype is NOT approved for HIPAA discussion. See these security considerations.

WebEx Cloud:

Faculty and staff log in to their virtual online room to create and schedule meetings. WebEx is browser based, and the virtual online meeting URL is specific to a user’s PirateID and never changes (ecu.webex.com/join/your-pirateID). This makes it easy for staff, students and non-ECU to join meetings from a Mac, PC, telephone or Android, Windows or iOS mobile device. Note: If your WebEx meeting will involve PHI (Protected Health Information), you are not permitted to record the meeting.

Visit the video and web conferencing website for more information.

My colleagues have made my life easy today with their posting about Webex

Webex serves as a feature-rich web conferencing tool for ECU users. On Friday, June 30, 2017, ITCS finalizes the transition from our current “on premises” version to the new WebEx Cloud. After this transition on June 30, the on premises WebEx version will no longer be available.

You Can Transition Now

WebEx Cloud is now live, so you may wish to start using the new interface. Also, after June 30, any scheduled meetings or recordings stored on the WebEx “on premises” server will no longer be available, so you will need to manually move these items as soon as possible.

Haven’t tried it?  Very easy to use and to share with colleagues within the college or outside the college.

Want to test it out send me a meeting request!
